“Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality.” -- Martin Luther King, Jr

Building on a rich history of “Service Learning”, the vision of I.S. 250 is to implement a standards based, collaborative study of the global community while recognizing that the world is best understood by beginning with in depth examinations of our own neighborhood.

We establish and maintain relationships with varied community partners in creating a school “without walls.” In so doing we continue the evolution of an educational institution that is a multifaceted resource for the same community from which we draw our vitality as an institution of academic, civic, and social growth for our students and the entire RFK community.

The RFK Magnet School of Community Studies offers a program to meet the needs of multicultural students ages 10-14 in grades 6, 7 and 8. Their potential is achieved through a program that recognizes and appreciates varied learning styles and provides flexible environments to meet the needs of every learner. We provide many opportunities for exploration and self expression within a balanced curriculum through standards driven instruction crafted to accommodate varied learning styles. As a Magnet school we have been enabled to expand upon our definition of community. It has opened up our school zone, inviting children from district 25 and 28 to apply. It has also broadened our learning through the community model, providing us with great new resources and programs such as Outward Bound, City Lore, the Renzulli program and Rachel’s Challenge.

Our partnerships and programs focus on building character while maximizing the intellectual growth of every student. Through helping each child make critical connections between academic requirements and the rest of their lives, including understanding themselves in the context of both the local and global communities, our students gain a deeper grasp of their connection to the rest of the world. Now, as a Magnet school, we can do many things we had only dreamed of to help bring out the very best in our bright, creative students, as they are guided by our caring, dedicated and very enthusiastic professional staff.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide a superior education through the use of innovative, high interest, standards based programs that address the needs and learning styles of all children in an environment designed to stimulate their natural curiosity. We will nurture the whole child by engaging critical thinking skills across all content areas, while infusing character education, stressing the values of respect, tolerance and fairness in a context of meaningful family and community involvement. We strive to prepare each graduate for success in the 21st century as truly moral members of society.
