Community Involvement

The Discovery School for Inquiry and Research welcomes parent involvement at all levels of student learning. Parent volunteers work side by side with teachers in many classrooms adding diverse ideas and cultural perspectives to the learning context.  Parents are also involved at both the planning and implementation stages of evening events, such as the recent Folktales from Around the World celebration. This event invited parents to share folktales from their country of origin with other families from the school community.

Pei-Hsia Wang, parent coordinator at The Discovery School for Inquiry and Research, organizes bimonthly parent workshops dealing with topics as diverse as family finances and helping parents to prepare students for standardized tests. In an effort to keep parents up to date on the latest advancements in technology, The Discovery School for Inquiry and Research offers a parent lead adult computer class. It also hosts an ESL program for adult learners.

The WIZZ Room

The Discovery School for Inquiry and Research boasts a room specifically designed to meet the needs of parents. Conveniently located on the first floor, the WIZZ Room offers an attractive meeting area with free Internet access and a wide variety of quality literature. The WIZZ Room is also the venue for bimonthly parent workshops.

Community Books

When you read a book, you are part of something larger than yourself. Every month, our entire school community reads, reflects upon and creates a project based upon our principal’s favorite books. Each class collectively produces a project in response to the book, which is prominently displayed in our hallways. Everyone is encouraged to be involved in this program, including family members and people from our local community. Community Books illustrates our commitment to literacy and to our love of learning.
