Nestled in a quiet cul-de-sac behind a public park, The Discovery School for Inquiry and Research offers students a wide range of educational opportunities in a safe, nurturing environment. Our newly-opened Robin Hood Library provides an ideal setting for inquiry and research-based learning. The Discovery School for Inquiry and Research’s open-door policy warmly welcomes parents to visit their child’s class, ask questions and voice concerns. Our parents are invited to take advantage of our Parent Resource Center, the WIZ room, which provides free Internet access, quality literature and a place to convene and network with other parents. Students enjoy the benefits of both small-class size and hands-on, discovery-based learning experiences with our innovative, standards-based curriculum. The Discovery School’s inquiry approach to instruction fosters student engagement and growth. Students are guided as they learn how to research, connect and apply their learning. Students demonstrate their knowledge in culminating projects, which drive each unit of study. We are excited to announce that we are in the second phase of becoming an accredited International Baccalaureate World School. As part of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, all of our 2nd through 5th graders receive instruction in Mandarin Chinese language and culture. In an effort to further our mission to develop internationally-minded students, graduating 5th graders who go above-and-beyond will be awarded a second diploma for community service. For further information about specific programs click here. Our standards based curriculum places students in the center of the learning process. The Discovery’s schools inquiry-based approach to instruction fosters student engagement and growth. Students are guided as they research and go in-depth into units of study hands. While the students learn the necessary reading and writing skills, these units take them much further along their educational journey – having them evaluate information and demonstrate their knowledge in culminating projects. Below is an example of a class project, a freedom quilt commemorating the struggles of slaves on the Underground Railroad. The second photo of famous women and their achievements illustrates how another class used inquiry, research and computer skills to present their new understandings. |
